ELLIS HOLDS FIRM FOR GREEN HOUSE INSTALLATION
Pipe clamps from the Ellis Apache range have been installed in an award winning sustainable home built on the eco-friendly BRE Innovation Park in Watford.
The Barratt Green House, which was designed by Gaunt Francis Architects, is the result of the Mail on Sunday’s 2007 Home for the Future Design Award and has the potential, in terms of practicality and affordability, to be built in volume.
Built by Barratt Developments, the prototype on Innovation Park is the first property on the site to be built by a mainstream builder. It meets Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, and the Government’s definition of zero carbon, meaning it qualifies for exemption from stamp duty – a key factor in its all-round appeal. Additionally, the three-storey home is suitable for either detached or terraced development, and boasts a host of energy saving features that include a rainwater collection and re-use system, which supplies flushing water for all toilets.
Martin Carton, sales representative for Ellis, said: “This type of home could well be the future for British housing and so it’s a huge boost for Ellis to have the Apache clamps specified for use in the prototype.”
The Ellis Apache clamps allow pipes to be hung either with the use of a screwed rod or directly fixed onto framing channel. Manufactured wholly in the UK, they are distributed exclusively by BSS nationwide and are available in 16 different sizes, Apache products are suitable for metric pipes ranging from 15mm to 171mm and imperial pipes from ½“ to 6” bore. Additionally, the robustness of the product design and its good chemical resistance ensure its longevity.
The innovative approach of Ellis to product development is demonstrated by the incorporation of a ‘twist fit’ feature on the Apache framing channel range that is designed to dramatically reduce installation time so that the installed price of the product is cheaper than competing product. The installer simply fits the clamp by inserting it into the channel, twisting it, and, after locating the pipe, snapping the captive overstrap shut.
Ian Massey, contracts director for Design Heating Ltd, commented: “The pipe work that had to be installed in the Green House was pre-lagged and the Apache clamps really were the only choice due to the ease with which they can be installed directly onto channel. In fact it’s fair to say, that using Apache clamps saved us time, money and effort".
